about

Inspired by the well-known diagrams and geometric theories of the eponymous mathematician coming from the cold 19th century Russian Empire, Matteo Nobile and Luca Scarrone explore through Voronoi the changing relationship between sound, structure and space. In a continuous metric and formal deconstruction the duo literally 'debunks' and 're-assemble' the musical narrative following a kind of probabilistic calculation that balances sound and rhythm in a seemingly chaotic geometry. As for the Russian mathematicianʼs theories (nowadays used in wireless wave propagation, geo- location systems, graphic modelling and research procedures used for commercials, indexes and cookies) the result strikes you as really contemporary.

With a tracklist that sounds like a cataloguing of experiments, this debut EP by Voronoi opens with ʻV2ʼ in which disrupted arpeggios of Korg MS50 seem to seek refuge into the rhythmic clusters that constantly build up and then collapse bringing the track always into the different scenarios. An exhausting duel between scientific rigour and raw improvisation in ʻV3ʼ leads you into the core of the record where the whole thing surprisingly turns into a dense hazy down tempo groove that slowly takes you into a more ʻcomfortable zoneʼ. The third ʻV4ʼ, completely free from any preconfigured sequences and grids with its hybrid sounds and asymmetrical rhythms reaches its climax towards the end after a series of schizophrenic upheavals where an anxious build-up definitely sets Voronoiʼs style into those that are hard to classify. ʻV1ʼ closes this serie of musical experiments delivering a sense of unfinished, a vibrating mass full of different views as if to give you a possibility to perceive a potential inertia of this project.
